Integrated studio summer designs

I chose to focus more on the styles of the 40's not only because the styles were so feminine and elegant but because it was a hard time for America and the styles of clothes changed reflecting the war time. It was very interesting to talk to my grandparents about what they remember wearing during the 40's and how the war affected the way they dressed or what fabrics were available to them.
After the war people rid themselves of any reminders of the past few hard years. The late 40's completely changed the fashion trends of the previous years in the 40's. Skirts came back to their fullness and longer length. Women became bolder and began wearing pants on some occasions. Cap sleeves and the sweet heart neckline were both very popular as the 40's became the 50's.
A lot of the style of the mid 40's while the war was going on reflected war efforts. Army and Navy imitations became popular in women's wear especially if you had a loved one in the war. Shoulder pads became popular in order to give women the square, military look. Skirts were still full to an extent but silky fabrics and nylon were both used as parachute fabric in the war therefore simpler fabrics were used for clothing.
The early 40's fashion consisted of gathers, pleats, knee length hem lines and defined waist lines. Shirts were almost always tucked in and tailored to accentuate the curves of the womanly figure with full flowing skirts on the bottom. Once the war efforts started up in 1941 restrictions on fabric took a toll on the trend of flowing skirts.

This drawing I completed in my 2nd semester drawing class (ideation). This image represents a lot of my personality and design styles. Most of my work contains curved, feminine lines and icons such as bows. I really enjoyed experimenting with the collage technique which was used in this drawing when we cut up an existing figure drawing and blended it into a new image. The freedom in this technique really allowed me to show my personal style.

This project I completed the second semester of 3D class in foundation year. My design was a "cup of tea kit." I developed a little bag in which there was exactly enough ingredients to make 3 cups of tea a day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This kit included 3 spoonfuls of sugar, a spoon, and 3 tea bags with a zipper and little handle so that it is easy to carry. I was really proud of this project because I had never worked with such stiff fabric before because the out side casing is a thick plastic material and the lining has incredibly stiff interfacing ironed on in order to keep the bag's shape. I loved exploring these new materials and the final result!

This project I completed the second semester of 3D in foundation. It is a laptop carrier case that is supposed to help traveling become easier and comfier. There is a sleeve for your laptop and a pillow on the other side which can either zipper off and be put behind your back or can be used as a lap desk when working on your laptop on the train. I loved creating this bag and after it was finished was very proud of the outcome. The foundation projects I was most passionate about usually consisted sewing and fabric because that is what I love to use!
